13 - Would you fly on a plane without the pilot?

When speaking of Do It Yourself Orthodontics (DIYO), it’s pretty evident that the orthodontist is unneeded to achieve the final goal of a good alignment and sound occlusion. People are brought to think that it’s a safe and easy journey. To me it’s exactly as to take off on a plane without pilot. Modern pilots are computer assisted from take-off to landing, but the human presence has not been questioned. It’s self-evident that a human brain is needed to take care of the minor and major variables that may cause harm during the flight.I may be wrong, but I guess if a Tesla-like airplane company would try to get into the market, proposing low cost flights, it wouldn’t have that big success. Just because people would think that’s crazy to flight without a pilot. The hostess and stewards + the mechanic that controls the plane before the flight, are not considered an high enough guarantee to have a safe flight.Well, that’s exactly what’s happening in case of the homemade or scanning center made DIYO.The hostess are the dental assistants that scans you / welcome you on board. The dental technician who elaborates the treatment plan is like the mechanic who checks that all is fine before to leave and sets an ideal route to the final destination. But thereafter only the automatic pilot and the patient self-perception are responsible of how to get to the destination. What if the automatic pilot deflates?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IS6DEUZ_gsWell, with orthodontics you won’t risk your life, but a good piece of health. There’s low-cost and low-cost. A low-cost that makes dumping into the market because of underpaid doctors, and big scale purchases, may provide a not ideal service, but at least the orthodontist/the pilot stills plays a role.An airplane company who provides a low-cost service with no pilot, is simply irresponsible or illegal! And only a minority of crazy people would accept to fly in that way.

Why in case of orthodontics it seem all that easy?

Why our profession should be spoiled of it’s professionalism?

It may seem easy to align teeth, but to do it in the proper way you should master the science&art of orthodontics exactly in the same way as an airplane pilot master the science&art of aviation. Here’s my idea of a script for a counter-campaign video to make people aware of the risk they run by doing things by themselves. I hope you enjoy this metaphor and that someone could develop this or similar ideas to help into public awareness of the importance of the role of orthodontists!
